About Cow Hollow

Originally known as Spring Valley, San Francisco’s Cow Hollow neighborhood began in the mid-1800s as a rural agricultural hub centered around Washerwoman’s Lagoon. The area earned its name from the dozens of dairies and hundreds of cattle that grazed its pastures. In 1891, the city banned livestock and filled in the lagoon to accommodate rapid residential growth. Because the neighborhood largely escaped damage during the 1906 earthquake and fire, it retains an exceptionally well-preserved collection of Victorian and Edwardian architecture. Notable local landmarks include the 1861 McElroy Octagon House, the Italianate Casebolt House, and the 1905 Vedanta Temple, the oldest Hindu temple in the Western world. Today, Union Street serves as the neighborhood's vibrant commercial heart, lined with historic carriage houses and Victorian storefronts.

The area acts as a bustling urban hub, characterized by a lively atmosphere that blends historic charm with modern convenience. The commercial spine along Union Street features a high density of dining and retail options, ranging from popular casual eateries to established local landmarks. According to iHuus data, the neighborhood benefits from a perfect walkability score, ensuring that daily errands and social outings are easily accessible on foot. The built environment remains compact, with mid-rise structures that prioritize density over expansive private outdoor space, creating a social and active streetscape. Prospective residents should consider the trade-offs inherent in this dense, urban setting. The acoustic environment is influenced by consistent road traffic, resulting in a moderate noise profile for those living near major thoroughfares. Privacy is also limited by the tight proximity of buildings, which are often separated by less than two meters. Despite these factors, the neighborhood maintains high standards for health insurance coverage and industrial safety, making it a stable choice for those who prioritize proximity to city amenities and a high-energy lifestyle over seclusion or quietude.
