About Sky Hy

Sky Hy (originally Sky Hy Ranch) was established as Lafayette’s first gated community in 1973. The neighborhood’s origins trace back to 1871, when the Hamlin family purchased a 200-acre parcel that operated as a dairy ranch and hosted the annual Lafayette Horse Shows from 1935 to 1943. In 1941, Federal Judge O.D. Hamlin built a custom Spanish-style estate, the Hamlin House, atop the property's highest peak. Decades later, the family sold 45 acres to developers who converted the land into a private enclave of 29 homes centered around Sky Hy Circle. Today, this tight-knit community on the Lafayette-Moraga border is known for its scenic views, rolling hills, and a unique neighborhood park that was designed and planted by local children and families in the late 1990s.

The neighborhood functions as a secluded residential pocket defined by its rural character and high visual appeal. Its elevated position provides expansive views of the surrounding hills, creating a distinct sense of separation from the denser parts of Lafayette. The area maintains a consistent residential focus with minimal commercial development, ensuring that the landscape remains dominated by green space and private estates.

Prospective residents should note that the area presents specific trade-offs regarding acoustic comfort, as iHuus data indicates higher noise levels than the city average. Furthermore, the location faces challenges with fire safety, which is a common consideration for rural-adjacent properties in the region. Despite these factors, the neighborhood remains a highly sought-after destination for families, particularly due to its proximity to elite institutions within the Acalanes and Lafayette school districts.
