Amerige Heights in western Fullerton is a master-planned, pedestrian-friendly neighborhood built on the former 293-acre campus of the Hughes Aircraft Company’s Ground Systems Group. From 1957 until its closure in 1994, this aerospace facility was a major local employer and Cold War defense hub specializing in ground radar systems. Between 2001 and 2004, the industrial site underwent a massive transformation. Prominent urban planner Peter Calthorpe designed the new mixed-use community, which replaced two million square feet of demolished concrete and steel with walkable streets, parks, schools, and diverse residential housing. Embodying New Urbanism principles, Amerige Heights integrated residential and commercial spaces and was honored as the 2004 Project of the Year by the Orange County branch of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
